XML Sitemap Validator: Free Sitemap Syntax and URL Checker

An XML sitemap validator checks that your sitemap is well-formed XML, uses the correct sitemap protocol, and lists reachable URLs. We recommend the free Validate XML Sitemap tool at xml-sitemaps.com, which checks a sitemap URL at no cost with limits on sitemap size per check. It validates the file — confirming Google indexes the listed pages still requires Search Console's Sitemaps report.

What is XML Sitemap Validator?

Search Console tells you a sitemap “couldn't be read” but rarely explains why. A dedicated validator fills the gap: it parses your sitemap exactly, flags malformed XML, wrong namespaces, bad dates, oversized files, and URLs that redirect or 404.

The free tier limits per check are published on the provider's site — for most small and medium sites a single check covers the whole sitemap. Large sites with sitemap indexes should validate the index plus each child sitemap individually.

Main features

  • XML well-formedness check

Catches unescaped characters, bad nesting, and encoding problems that make parsers reject the file.

  • Protocol compliance

Verifies required tags, URL encoding, date formats, and sitemap-index structure against the sitemaps.org protocol.

  • Listed-URL status check

Fetches the URLs in your sitemap to surface redirects, 404s, and blocked pages that waste crawl attention.

  • Size and count limits

Flags sitemaps exceeding the 50,000-URL or 50MB (uncompressed) protocol limits that require splitting.

Is XML Sitemap Validator free?

The recommended validator is free to use without an account, with per-check size limits disclosed on the provider's site. XML-Sitemaps.com also sells related crawler products, but validation itself costs nothing. Always confirm current limits on the tool page, as free tiers change.

No account needed for basic validation. Very large sitemaps may need to be checked in parts.

How to use XML Sitemap Validator

  1. Find your sitemap URL (commonly yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml for WordPress SEO plugins).

  2. Paste it into the validator and run the check.

  3. Fix structural errors first (malformed XML rejects the entire file), then URL-level issues (redirects, 404s, noindexed URLs).

  4. Keep sitemaps to canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs only — remove tags, thin archives, and redirected addresses.

  5. Submit the clean sitemap in Search Console under Indexing > Sitemaps and watch the discovered/indexed counts.

Advantages and limitations

Where it shines

  • Explains failures that Search Console only labels generically.
  • Free with no account for typical site sizes.
  • Checks both syntax and the live status of listed URLs.
  • Fast enough to run after every structural site change.

Where it falls short

  • Free-tier size limits mean very large sitemaps need chunked checks.
  • Validates the file, not indexing — Google may still choose not to index listed pages.
  • Third-party service: don't submit sensitive or private URLs.
  • Doesn't assess whether your sitemap strategy (what's included) is sound.

Best use cases

  • New sites

Validate the first sitemap before submission so discovery isn't delayed by a syntax error.

  • WordPress users

After changing SEO plugins, validate that the new sitemap URL works and old one is removed from Search Console.

  • Large sites

Check each child sitemap in an index separately to isolate which section has errors.

XML Sitemap Validator FAQ

Is this validator affiliated with Google?
No. It is an independent free service. Google confirms sitemap processing separately in Search Console's Sitemaps report — use both.
My sitemap is valid but pages aren't indexed. Why?
Validity only means Google can read the file. Indexing depends on content quality, uniqueness, internal linking, and crawl prioritization. Check Search Console's Pages report for per-URL reasons.
Should non-indexable URLs be in my sitemap?
No. Include only canonical URLs that return HTTP 200 and are indexable. Redirects, 404s, noindexed, and canonicalized URLs dilute the sitemap's value.
